And so Father’s Day came and went. I wanted to publish this Father’s Day-themed post in time for a Dad’s day shout out… A year ago… It slipped under the radar for a bit. Enjoy the read, amigo! Continue reading
Some weekends are shit-shows. This weekend was just that
To clarify, little, is a relative term.
I spent a large amount of time during the Summer of 2016 floating down rivers and throwing flies with just about anyone who would join me. Like my previous few posts, this is yet another documentation of such. Continue reading
Sometimes, it doesn’t matter where you fish or what you catch; good company is good company… Continue reading
This past Summer, my brother and I hit the Rappahannock one last time before I relocated. Grad school called, I answered, and a move was imminent. So, we threw a canoe in the back of the truck, grabbed a few fly rods, loaded the cooler with ice cold goodies, and proceeded to float. The water was slightly cooler than the air. The sun broke through the clouds more often than not. Also, I don’t remember it being crazy hot, which means it wasn’t (based on the, you only remember the outliers, school of thought). Carp on the fly: pretty popular right now, and for good reason. These fish are everywhere. You don’t have to make extensive travel plans in order to pursue. Plus, carp get big. Here in America, we love big things. Continue reading
5:30 AM on a Sunday? I guess so. Why do I wake up so early for this? Early bird gets… the fish. How does my brother listen to Bad Religion at 6 AM? Does this stream even have a name? “Maybe yes, maybe no, maybe go…” Continue reading
The morning started similar to most when you’re with a good group of friends who, without question, drink their socks off the night before – half awake, with a headache, and forgetting one or two essential items. I managed to forget all three pairs of sunglasses I packed. Stevie left his water bottle by the car. Off to a good start… Continue reading
The mystical and magical creation powers of rain appear time and again in different cultures throughout history. Yes, admittedly, I no longer believe in them. However, rain – or more simply, water – is vital to life. Sadly, whenever I think of rain it’s a 50-50 shot at C.C.R. or that fucking – albeit catchy as hell – Luke Bryan song.
The Outer Banks (OBX) of North Carolina. Before last week, I would have thought someone crazy for evening associating the OBX and “nice fly fishing destination”. And I kind of still do. However, just because a place isn’t the best, or even better than most, doesn’t mean it ain’t good. My recent adventure to this Eastern Shore family vacation hub provided plenty of good fly fishing.
There is a time and a place for almost everything. This was a time and a place for a guide. Continue reading
Excerpt from a recent bar conversation with someone who doesn’t fish: “How do they (the fish) feel after you release them; do you think they remain frightened? Even if they don’t remember it, is it a suppressed thing, like PTSD?” Continue reading
The best alternative to actually hitting the water? Doing fly fishing related activities! Honestly, you can’t beat throwing flies to your subsurface species of choice. However, in order to become the not as accomplished as we might think anglers, we must learn from others. The Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival provides the opportunity to hear from some of the industries best, to converse with the shop owners, see new products, and pick up all the much needed swag.
